Karen Lynn Daniel was born Karen Lynn Neal, in Dayton, Ohio, in 1949. Her parents were from Hazard and Vicco Kentucky, and they moved to Ohio in their teens to avoid an early death from working in the Kentucky coal mines. She was the first person in her family to go to college. She left Dayton and went to college at Howard University. She got pregnant at 19 years old, while in college, and still graduated in 4 years with a B.A. in English from Howard. She then went on to get a law degree from Georgetown Law School. She began her law career, in 1978, in George Wallace Alabama, and became one of the first black women in the State of Alabama to own her own law firm. She ran her law firm for over 30 years, and eventually became a municipal court judge for the City of Montgomery, Alabama, where she was a champion for domestic violence victims. Karen Lynn Daniel was a enterpernuer, a trailblazer, a strong supporter of women's rights and a great legal mind. The Karen Lynn Daniel Scholarship will be given out every year to a student at Carver High School in Atlanta, Georgia, who demonstrates the great entrepreneurial spirit, and potential of Karen Lynn Neal.
